Vivo V15 Pro Review: Design
When you pick up the Vivo V15 Pro for the first time, you will immediately be impressed by its design. On the front, the device offers a nearly bezel-less display with no notches at all, thanks to the new pop-up camera. While the selfie camera is hidden inside, the earpiece grill is on the top of the display. Even the chin is close to non-existent.
On the back, the device features a dual-tone gradient color finish, which looks quite attractive, and the vertically positioned triple camera setup adds to the already great aesthetics of the smartphone.
On the bottom edge, there is a micro USB port, which is quite disappointing. However, considering most people still have micro USB cables lying around their houses and the fact that the cable is much cheaper compared to USB Type-C cables, this might have been the right choice for the company to make. A speaker grill and the primary microphone also sit near the micro USB port.
The left edge holds a dedicated Google Assistant button and an external micro SD card slot, whereas, on the right edge you will find a power button and the volume rockers. On the top edge, there is a secondary noise-cancelling microphone along with a 3.5-mm headphone jack.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Display
Vivo V15 Pro has a 6.39 inch AMOLED Display with no notch and yet 91.64% screen to body ratio. The display supports full HD+ resolution and it has a fast in-display fingerprint sensor underneath. The display is bright and vivid. It has deep black levels with superior contrast ratio.
The text is crisp and the images are sharp. It has wide viewing angles, but sunlight readability is not the best we have seen in an AMOLED display. It is well suited for media consumption and text reading. The bezels around the mobile are thin and the chin below is slim as well. Overall, a very pleasant display to use.
As far as the in-display fingerprint scanner is concerned, the technology has improved quite a lot over the years. The new fifth generation scanner works much better than the one on the Vivo V11 Pro. The unlocking speed is now much faster and even the failure rate has been marginally decreased.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Hardware & Performance
Vivo V15 Pro is one of the first mobiles to be powered by the all-new Snapdragon 675 processor with an 11nm architecture and Octa-core (2×2.0 GHz Kryo 460 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 460 Silver) CPU. It has Adreno 612. The mobile has 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. I have installed over 40 applications on this mobiles and loaded it with loads of media files. The mobile did not show me any signs of sluggishness.
The apps were fast to open and the 6 GB RAM does a good job in multi-tasking. The gameplay was smooth and it showed little or no lag while playing resource-intensive games. Graphics rendering quality is good. The mobile supports dual VoLTE. It has all the required sensors. Vivo V15 Pro has a top-notch hardware performance and it is tough to call it a mid-range mobile. The new Snapdragon 675 processor, matches the real-life performance of any flagship processor.
The new Vivo V15 Pro has face unlock and fingerprint sensor. You have an option to pop up the camera every time when you unlock the mobile or to invoke it by sliding the screen up. Either way, it is super fast in elevating, detecting and sinking back. It is accurate at any light conditions, but fast when there is ample daylight. The in-display fingerprint sensor is also fast and accurate. It is not slow and sluggish as the one in my Vivo Nex. It is reliable and with combined face unlock, unlocking the Vivo V15 Pro is natural and fast. Both mechanisms can be used at the same time. The fastest unlocks the mobile first and the second mechanism becomes a fall-back net.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Software
Vivo V15 Pro runs on Android 9 with Funtouch OS 9 skinned on top. Fun touch still has a bunch of bloatware. It has an added a few good features like Game Cube: a gaming suite, Motorbike mode, gesture navigation, App permission management center, kids mode, Face beauty for video calls, Smart screen split, screen recording with voice and much more. The features are useful, but still, Funtouch OS lack visual finesse. It is functional, but not aesthetically appealing. But the UI is fast and responsive. It is well optimized for the hardware and works smoothly.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Camera
Taking inspiration from the last year’s NEX, V15 Pro carries the same Elevating Front Camera, but this time, it is even better. The Vivo V15 Pro incorporates an industry-first 32MP pop-up selfie camera, which delivers good clarity. The unique pop-up front camera, housed within the phone body, smoothly emerges from the top of the smartphone and retracts once the selfie has been clicked. The design works like magic and ensures the camera system’s safety and reliability.
The V15 Pro features an AI-enabled 48 Million Quad Pixel Sensor (12 Million Effective Pixels) + 8MP + 5MP triple rear camera with a 1/2.25-inch sensor and a large f/1.8 aperture along with a 32MP Pop-up front camera. The smartphone uses quad-pixel technology, which combines 4 adjacent pixels into one ‘super pixel’ delivering high-quality 12MP photos while ensuring clearer and sharper low light photography. The powerful combination of 8MP AI-enabled Super Wide-Angle camera, a 5MP Depth camera, and an upgraded AI algorithm allows for a wider 108 degrees view that results in better picture composition.
Here are some pictures I took with the phone
The powerful hardware is complemented with AI to make professional photo-taking a breeze. The all-new AI Super Night Mode makes shaky night shots a thing of the past, as consumers can now capture amazing night scenery without a tripod or a DSLR camera. The AI Super Night Mode can instantly take multiple photos at a different exposure. It also brilliantly combines them to greatly improve brightness and clarity allowing night scenes to be captured with great detail.
Besides creating great low-light shots, the V15 Pro camera is capable of optimizing each shot by detecting the photo conditions. It comes equipped with upgraded AI Body Shaping to AI Portrait Lighting features, for enhancing the photography experience. After identifying photo scenes, the AI suggests appropriate filters, and with time learns to produce better results.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Battery
Vivo V15 Pro is backed by a 3,700mAh battery, which seems like a great proposition on paper. During the review period, the device managed to pull off a full day with normal usage, which included a few phone calls, social media scrolling, and some light gaming. With the help of included 18W fast charger, the device usually took around 90 minutes to get fully charged. However, the phone did get slightly warm while charging.
Vivo V15 Pro Review: Verdict
While the Vivo V15 Pro is not here to impress you with its specifications, it is quite appealing to the eyes. The 32-megapixel pop-up camera and the new fifth-generation in-display fingerprint scanner make the smartphone stand out a lot from all the other devices in the market. With the V15 Pro, Vivo is trying to bring futuristic tech, great design and an amazing set of cameras to the masses.
In a nutshell, the Vivo V15 Pro, at Rs. 28,999, might seem an expensive deal when compared to something like a Poco F1. However, it does pack a punch, and you won’t regret buying it according to me.
